Your homepage is a decision gate: what visitors need to see in the first ten seconds
Visitors decide in seconds whether to stay. A homepage that says what you do, who it is for and what to do next turns more of those seconds into enquiries.
Most homepages are written as a welcome: a big photo, a slogan and a paragraph about the company. Visitors do not arrive looking for a welcome. They arrive with a question, and they decide very quickly whether your site is going to answer it.
Think of the homepage as a gate. In the first few seconds it should help the right visitors step through and let the wrong ones leave without wasting anyone’s time.
Say what you do, plainly
The main headline should describe what you do in words your customers use. “Skip bin hire across the northern suburbs” beats “Your partner in waste solutions”. A clear headline also helps Google understand what the page is about.
Say who it is for
Right under the headline, make it obvious who you serve: homeowners or builders, small firms or large organisations, one city or a whole region. Visitors who see themselves in that line keep reading.
Show one obvious next step
Pick the one action you most want, such as a quote request, a call or a booking, and make it the main button. Add a second, lighter option for people who are not ready yet. Too many buttons with equal weight make people hesitate.
Back it up with proof
Below the first screen, show why visitors can trust you: genuine reviews, the kind of work you do, years of experience, accreditations, or the areas you cover. Keep claims specific and true.
Design for the phone first
Most visitors to service businesses arrive on a phone. Check that the headline, the main button and a way to call are all visible without scrolling on a small screen, and that the page loads quickly on a mobile connection.
If a visitor cannot tell what you do and what to do next in ten seconds, the design is not finished.
A quick test you can do today
Show your homepage on a phone to someone who does not know your business for ten seconds, then take it away. Ask them what you do, who it is for and what they would click. If they cannot answer all three, the homepage needs work.
